Stars, a book and fleurs-de-lis

Redesigned as part of the university’s 150th anniversary celebration, a committee of students and alumni designed the ring to bear the university’s shield.

The iconic shield includes three stars and two bars taken from President Washington’s coat of arms. The university’s motto, “Per Veritatem Vis”—Strength Through Truth—is conveyed through the open book at the center of the shield. Three fleurs-de-lis, representing King Louis IX of France for whom St. Louis was name, complete the university’s shield.
